Google Adsense is one of the best advertising management solutions available. It’s not the only one, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more intuitive and efficient program.
Of course, if you’re new to the blogosphere and the publishing world, you probably don’t know where to start to monetize your ads. In this article, we’ll walk you through the steps to apply for a Google AdSense account and the mistakes you should avoid making.
Not everyone gets AdSense approval
One thing new publishers don’t realize is that just because you request a Google Adsense account doesn’t mean you automatically get there. Google’s policies are intentionally obscure, giving them the leeway to reject and accept whoever they see fit.
Of course, it’s not that confusing why so many requests from people are turned down. People applying for an account may ignore considerations like privacy policies, contact pages, and having a substandard website.
It goes without saying that Google has high standards when it comes to the quality of its advertising network. Therefore, they have very strict requirements, rules, and regulations that publishers must follow.
So, before applying for Google AdSense, make sure you meet all of the following conditions:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have an active Gmail account that is not already associated with an AdSense account.
- You have an online website that meets all the conditions of use of Google.
- Your website is at least three (3) months old.
- Your website content is up to date and relevant – you must have published at least 30 articles that provide value to your visitors and it must also have a contact page and a privacy page.
- You have significant website traffic (there is no minimum amount required here, but more is better).
In essence, you should already have established a decent web presence in Google’s eyes. If your content contains spam and violates Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices, Google will not recognize your content or website as relevant or authoritative, and will likely deny you an account.
How to apply for a Google AdSense account
The actual process of applying for a Google Adsense account is fairly straightforward, as long as you have fulfilled the above conditions and created a Google Account that includes a Gmail address.
Here are the steps to apply for a Google Adsense account:
1. Apply to the program
The first step is to complete the online Google AdSense application. The very first page of the app requires you to fill in your website URL, email address, and choose whether or not you want to receive emails from Google.
These emails are essentially personalized tips and performance suggestions to help you along your AdSense journey. If you choose not to receive these emails, it won’t affect Google’s decision (but it sure won’t hurt).
2. Provide the requested information
After you’ve filled in your basic information, Google will direct you to the next section of your app, which will be a bit different, especially since Google changes its layout often.
However, the requested information remains the same, so be prepared with the following information:
- Your business name or the name of the person your account is under
- Your contact name
- Your physical mailing address
- Your email address (from your Gmail account)
- Your phone number
Once you’ve filled in this information, Google will want to verify your phone number. It will also send a PIN code to your physical mailing address to confirm that your address is correct. So make sure everything is filled out correctly.
It may all sound very simple, but if you do not verify this information once you get the approval, you will lose said account approval. So be careful!
3. Use your temporary approval to your advantage
Google AdSense will give you temporary approval within 24-48 hours of completing your application. Of course, if you have prepared a valuable and creative website that has never been associated with Google AdSense in the past, it shouldn’t be long before you get official approval.
Within two (2) days of completing your application, you should receive the Temporary Approval Notice until you complete the other verification steps.
With a temporary approval, you will receive a code that will allow you to start placing ads on your website immediately and see click-through rate and inbound income. Google does this on purpose to make sure that you don’t click your own ads or invite suspicious traffic to your site to make it look like you have AdSense-worthy traffic.
It is essential that once you post an ad, you leave it alone. This means that you do not play with your ad placement, code, or spam methods to generate suspicious traffic, otherwise, Google will reject your application.
4. Verify your account
Account verification is no longer an informal step as you can take your time, but it should always be done as soon as possible.
To validate the official approval of your AdSense account, you need to verify the PIN that Google sent you, your bank account numbers, your tax information, and your phone number. Your PIN will usually arrive within one (1) week to 10 days, and you will not be able to touch your new income unless you verify this information accurately.
Make sure you follow Google’s guidelines
Finally, it is imperative that you continue to follow Google’s AdSense guidelines. You can use your AdSense code for multiple websites, however, you only want to post ads on other websites if they follow the guidelines above.
Also, remember to never click on your own ads or ask others to click on your ads – Google will know what you are doing and it will shut you down. As long as you stay in compliance with the guidelines, you will have a long and successful relationship with Google Adsense.
